Pierre is not my home town, but I’ve lived here for almost three years now, and I have to admit it has grown on me quite a bit!
Here’s a taste of what the Capital City has to offer…
South Dakota State Capitol Building
The South Dakota State Capitol Building is located in the heart of Pierre, which is located in the heart of the state. It was built between 1905 and 1910, and has been restored to its original beauty. The Capitol Grounds are also beautiful, with Capitol Lake (often frequented by feathered year-round residents, Canadian geese), war memorials and impressive sculptures.
Oahe Dam
This is one of my favorites. The Oahe Dam is a mile-long man-made dam along the Missouri River, just north of Pierre. The dam creates Lake Oahe, the 4th largest man-made reservoir in the United States, and one of the best walleye fisheries in the world…this would be why it’s my favorite.
) The river and the reservoir both provide for some excellent outdoor rec, whether you like to fish, boat, ski, or just hang out by the beach.
Cultural Heritage Center
Built into the side of one of the hills in Pierre, the Cultural Heritage Center is a tribute to the natural and cultural history of South Dakota. Visitors to the center’s museum will learn about everything from the archeology and mining of South Dakota, to the Native American culture, cowboys and ranching life, homesteading and Lewis & Clark history.
