A Frontier Christmas

by Katlyn Richter on December 1, 2010 · 1 comment

The holiday mood is set in northeast South Dakota. Holiday lights are twinkling, snow has fallen and the temperatures have dropped.

On December 11, don’t miss the 18th Annual Frontier Christmas at Fort Sisseton Historic State Park. The event provides the whole family with hours of opportunities to remember the Christmas traditions from generations before us.

Visitors can enjoy learning how to make holiday decorations, including popcorn garland. Musicians will be performing throughout the day. Don’t forget to try some freshly churned butter and homemade bread. Yum!

One of the best aspects of this event is the sleigh rides given by the fort’s horse drivers, of course, I think that the “Jingle Bells” carol must be sung along the way. Take some time (and hot chocolate) to walk around the fort to watch the demonstrations of carpentry, rope and soap making, spinning and weaving and watch the blacksmith hard at work.

And of course, stick around for Santa to share Christmas greetings to all visitors.
