Geese have arrived along the Missouri River in South Dakota by the thousands. Here a small flock glides past the tip of the state capitol dome in Pierre as they drop into Capitol Lake. Bald and golden eagles can’t be far behind as they prey on the geese and ducks that winter on the river.

Black Hills Photo Shootout registration open

Mountain bikers will be racing a 5.75 mile course of flat trails on LaFramboise Island in Pierre on Saturday, May 22. Registration begins at 8:30 am, with racing at 10:30.
LaFramboise Island Nature Area’s trails are also great for nature viewing, bird watching and easy recreational bicycle riding.

Sunrise gives the road alongside the Ingalls Homestead in DeSmet a golden glow.

Golden sunrise lights the road alongside the Ingalls Homestead just outside of DeSmet, South Dakota. Famed children’s author Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote about her life here in the “Little Town on the Prairie.” The homestead site, two homes that the Ingalls family lived in, family graves and much more are available for touring in DeSmet. A pageant featuring stories from the beloved books is presented each July next to the homestead grounds.

It’s that time of year when the prairie chickens and grouse (and lots of other animals for that matter) strut their stuff to impress the opposite sex. Males puff up large air sacs in their throats, spread their tales and wings and “dance” by stomping their feet. The ritual of nature can be seen from viewing blinds on the Fort Pierre National Grasslands. Visit Fort Pierre National Grasslands for information on reserving the viewing blinds.

Sparrow in the snow

Hopefully it’s the last time for this year, but snow is forecast for the Black Hills this week. Looks like some will be searching for Easter eggs in the white stuff. However, spring is coming and tree buds and green grass are popping up in other parts of the state.

There’s still some snow in the forecast, but everyone seems to be thinking spring. It won’t be long before flowers will again be blooming like these on the shore of Lewis and Clark Lake near Yankton. Wide angle lenses and polarizing filters make these kinds of photos really “pop” with color.

Buffalo wander the winter plains

An American Bison and calf wander across the snowy South Dakota plains. Bison, commonly known as buffalo, once roamed this part of the United States by the millions. Now they can be found in Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Badlands National Park, several Indian reservations and on numerous private ranches throughout the state.
